1 in 4 puppies in the UK come from puppy farms. Isn't it time to change? The KC operate an assured breeder scheme or you could look at a rescue. More info here Lucy's Law is passed 23 rd December banning 3rd party puppy sales in an effort to tackle puppy farming. Read more HERE

I'd love another dog after a gap of a few years, but it's difficult to know what's a true 'family reared' pup or if it comes from a farm.

I know it's so difficult... if getting a pup, try to visit (several times) at short notice and meet the Mom, hopefully the pups and Mom are in the house and treated as family pets. Use the Kennel club for registered breeders, the KC make unannounced visits to inspect breeders on their list, but don't just rely on that. Use your best detective skills and gut instinct. Consider a rescue, you should be able to get a comprehensive history and advice on whether or not your considered rescue dog would make a good pet - There's something heart warming about owning a rescue dog and giving it the best home it could have, I'm sure the dog would reward you infinitely with love.

Thanks, would prefer a rescue but of course can be seen as a bit 'pot luck', health and temperament-wise.

Not to be pushing the agenda of rehoming, but a huge amount of work is done behind the scenes, particularly at the DogsTrust. Pot luck regarding health and temperament is probably less so than choosing a puppy from a litter. Quoted from their website: "After their arrival at Dogs Trust, dogs will have a full check up with our on-site veterinarian. If they have come to us as a stray, not much will be known about their background so a full health check is needed. These checks ensure we can understand the needs of all our dogs, and prepare prospective families for any health conditions they may have. Dogs Trust will then automatically microchip and neuter all dogs." "This footage shows dogs playing and interacting at a Dogs Trust Rehoming Centre. Whilst they are waiting for new homes, all of our dogs have regular interaction with our Canine Carers and other dogs, to prepare them for life in a family home." www.dogstrust.org.uk/media-centre/dogs-trust-b-roll-footage
